Morocco Riad 101: Good-to-know facts
Moroccan Riad 101
Good-to-Know Facts
- If you are with little kids ( babies
and toddlers) rather stick with a hotel
I know that this
seems to be a bit odd, but this is a fact especially when it comes to the much
smaller Dars: Riads are small and as I mentioned previously several times, due
to their architectural features, their acoustics are awesome. You cannot really
separate yourself from other guests all that much. Which means if you are with
little kids, a baby or a toddler stick with a hotel It will be much more
convenient for you and so will it be for all all the other guests. In case you
still want to stay in a Riad, please get in touch with them and ask them if
they have rooms which are more separate than the others. And don’t get me
wrong, Arabs love children and no way a baby or a toddler would disturb them,
however let’s be honest, they can give the other guests a rather hard time and
all in all, an unpleasant holiday memory.
- Cash talks
It’s important
to note that most mid to even high category Riads likely won’t have ATM and
won’t accept credit card payments. This is something you need to clarify no
matter how you make your booking. Riads generally also accept USD and EUR, so
you save yourself from losing money on exchanging it or always double check on
this directly with the Riad if possible before you start your trip.
- The “ 10 minute walk” standard
After browsing
through Marrakech Riads you will see the “10 minute walk” from Jamaa El F’na
appear in pretty much all the descriptions. This is a standard that may not be
true at all. Always read plenty of previews to get an actual clue (or check the
Riad on the map) to see how much those 10 minutes really take to walk.
- There is a huge difference between
Riads and Riads
There are a
whole lot of different Riads out there nowadays starting from the cultural
differences to the quality differences. I will elaborate more on this when I
will introduce you to some of the Riads per traveler type, including my own
favorite ones. The Riads of Fés are
entirely different from the ones in Marrakech for instance, because they
represent a way different, more traditional style (they are way higher and
there are on balconies or alleyways on the outside, only windows open to the
courtyard) Nowadays we get to see lots of trendy Riads, there are fashionable
Riads and there are a whole lot of different modern or old style ones all across
Morocco. You need to do your own
research as well for sure, so that the Riad is closer to what you expect it to
be, not to mention the budget factor. One thing for sure, surprisingly even the
trendy Riads are much cheaper than any high class hotel in or outside of Europe
and this is a big deal.

Today we are so
lucky, because thanks to the global network of internet we can get to look at
places, accommodations, attractions without actually being there. There are
several booking sites which offer hundreds of Riads in Morocco. So, use this to
your advantage and read lots of reviews on places before choosing the Riad best
fit for you. In my upcoming articles, as said above, I will also give you help
on my part.
